Carter is in Caracas, and we have to act as if we cared (but so does the chavistas). And while Gaviria expressed confidence in the repair process, in some places there were lots of problems for the voters going to raify their signatures. Meanwhile the Electoral Council is issuing orders for the violence to stop… So that we don’t suspect that they also issue the orders for the violence to flare up.
From the inside we get reports of extensive cheating from the officialism and (excesive?) confidence from the opposition. My take is that the violence and the cheating is random and uneffective, but I am sure the officialistas have a plan to stop the referendum from happening, probably through their personal slaves in the Supreme Court.
As usual, Caracas Chroinicles has an excellent piece, very much worth reading…
