Led by a disgusting example

January 27, 2005

Today, Government newspaper Diario Vea published a cartoon, which continues on the same line of sexual innuendo started by President Chavez in reference to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice… The cartoon is so disgusting, debasing, gross and offensive, that I could not even conceive of posting it. But more importantly, I find the fact that anyone could author this and get it past the Editors of that newspaper absolutely disgusting. I must say that I knew there was a darker side to my country, but it really bothers me that something so offensive could be published by any media, official, commercial or whatever.

Before someone comes and says that Vea is an independent newspaper, It’s Director and founder is Guillermo Garcia Ponce, Political Commander of the Revolution in Chavez’ MVR party. His brother is both a reporter and a member of the Board, for which he is quite qualified, as he was a reporter for Tass, during the heyday of Soviet Communism. (His brother Guillermo was President of the Communist party ever since most Venezuelan left split from it because of the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968).

But even if Diario Vea were independent, this simply reflects the type of leadership this country has today. You lead by example, and the disgusting example was set by Hugo Chavez last Sunday, the rest, as they say, is simply history.
