Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

I was in Cambodia about 3 years ago for 5 weeks, working with the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), where they held the trials of members of the Khmer Rouge who committed genocide and crimes against humanity. I saw all the important places in Phnom Penh, including the royal palace, and went shopping like crazy in the Russian Market. After my assignment was over, I spent about a week in Siem Reap, where I visited the temples of Angkor Wat and other neighboring places. I really loved Cambodia and although it might remind you of Venezuela, I felt much more secure there. I even saw people jogging at 5 a.m. and although I took a lot of care, I never felt as if at any moment I might be mugged, kidnapped or killed. I even told my relatives in Venezuela, that even after 30 years of Communist rule and civil war, Cambodia was much better kept than Venezuela and Phnom Penh was cleaner.
