The cynical faces and statements of the immoral revolution

December 2, 2005

Today we heard from (from left to right above, we will remember), the Head of Conatel, the telecom regulator, former Minister of Information and current President of Telesur Izarra, the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Government’s TV station VTV, the immoral members of the Moral Power and the People’s Ombudsman, spewing all sorts of garbage about ethics, the Constitution, morality, peace and the defense of the people’s rights.

Now, not one of these personalities has said anything (As we say in Spanish: No han dicho ni pio!) about two very well known facts and events

–The machines used in the last three electoral processes did not adequately protect the secrecy of the people’s vote. I have yet to hear any of this cynics calling for an investigation to determine if this was a careless mistake or a flagrant violation of the rights of all Venezuelans, pro or against Chavez. For all we know there are still unknown flaws in the system

<!–[endif]–>None of these so called leaders, including the one that is supposed to defend us, the Peopel’s Ombudsman and the one that resigned supposedly on “ethical” grounds on April 11th. has ever expressed a similar complaint about that most fascist technological tool, the Maisanta database, created, paid for and implemented by this Government to violate the rights and discriminate Venezuelans. This simply shows we are in the hands of absolutely immoral people, without scruples willing to do anything to preserve their power.

None of these Government officials and politicians care about the people, democracy, the Constitution, ethics, morals and Venezuela. They only care about power, money and the perks that come with their respective positions.

(P.S. I do have to wonder why the Minister of Defense (above) had to hold a press conference to say that the Armed Forces are “united, cohesive and well led”. Could it be related to these home made bombs found at the military fort in Caracas?)

The amazing cynicism of our President and his party

December 2, 2005

Hugo Chavez tonight:

“A

“Nobody saw me anywhere raising
the hand of candidates, Alo President has been extremely respectful of
the regulations imposed by the CNE because the law begins at home and I
am obligated to give the example as Head of State that I am”

Well,
the law also prohibits the use of his image to promote candidacies, but
below are the four basic ballots for ALL pro-Chavez candidates in the
upcoming elections, which are combined with UVE or whatever party is
partnering up with Chavez in each district. ALL campaign posters, ads,
ballots and banners have this likeness. Of course, the drawing is from
the time that Chavez was much thinner, so many of you may no longer
recognize him. In any case, the opposition asked the CNE not to allow
this at a time that there were no observers and the Government was not
trying to appear so impartial. I imagine when the observers ask who is
that with the beret on the ballots, they answer: Oh! That is Maisanta!
Or do the they say it is Santa Ines?

As the British would say: “Bloody respectful of Mr. Chavez!”

Or how about those guys at the National Assembly, shamelessly using
the website of the Assembly to promote their party and show pictures of
their march today? The whole thing is so dirty that on the right where
they have the “legislative news” (which you may not distinguish), it
says ” list of Deputies for the Bloque de Cambio” (those that
support Chavez) That is, they are using an official Government page to
promote themselves, their silly accussations, marches, using public funds and there is no equivalent list
for the candidates of the opposition. How respectful of them!
These guys are just incredibly cynical and shameless.

An undemocratic Government responds to the consequences of their own failures

December 1, 2005

Incredible:

–The CNE was named illegally and has been running a flawed and biased electoral show for over two years.
–The CNE was caught redhanded with a critical (and fatal) flaw in the
same software that was supposed to protect the citizens and their
secret vote.
–The CNE has spent million of dollars in very sophisticated equipment, wasting money and making unilateral decisions on it
–This flawed system has been used in three consecutive elections..

The response by Government officials has been:

“Vayanse pa’l carajo (unstranslatable, go to Hell does not say it all)” ( VP Rangel)

“Rosales is a coward and coup plotter” (Hugo Chavez today, the same man jailed for a staging a bloody coup in 1992)

“Rosales is promoting a coup” (VP Rangel who had praised Rosales the day before for his democratic position)

“Nothing to negotiate, the elections will be on Sunday because the Electoral schedule has been fullfilled” (Cheater Jorge Rodriguez, who has never cared about formalities, now inds them essential)

“Washington designs strategic plans of the opposition” (Nicolas Maduro,
star accuser of the Government from his position as President of the
National Assembly. Find a case, he can find some evidence agaisnt
whomwever is against the Government)

“I am concerned about the slowness of the set up of polling stations” (People’s Ombudsman, who always speaks for the Government, appearing once to be defending the rights of the people)

“Elections should proceed this Sunday” (The same People’s Ombudsman, a couple of hours later, after surely being called by someone in Government to scold him for his earlier statement)

“The opposition will pressure international observers” (William Rara )

“The same thing is going to happen to the hermaphrodites of Primero Justicia” (Nicolas Maduro in a moment of serenity, openness and searching for a meaningful dialogue)

Now, is this the way the leaders of a democarcy behave? Note that
nobody, even the People’s Ombudsman speaks in favor of the right of the
people to have their vote be secret. And what about the way in which
three consecutive elections were performed with a flawed software and
wasteful expenses on equipment Jorge Rodriguez did not understand? None
of this matters.

This is a sick democracy indeed.

Rosales calls for Government to postpone elections

December 1, 2005

The last major party, other than MVR, that has not decided to withdraw
from the election is just asking for the suspension of the vote on
Sunday, the naming of a commission to look for a solution and have
everyone participate in it. Governor Manuel Rosales of Zulia State was
on nationwide TV putting pressure on the Government to postpone the
event. He did not explicitly say his party would not participate on
Sunday, but said that it is not a democratic process if there is no
participation by the majority.

The perverse and massive violation of the law and the rights of Venezuelans by the Government sponsored Maisanta software

December 1, 2005

This post contains material that is not new or even original. Both Alek Boyd and El Universal
have covered it. But it is quite different to read about the so called
Maisanta software than to use it. Today, a friend got me a copy of the
Maisanta software and database. After using it and playing with it for a
while; it is difficult to express the outrage I feel. This piece of
software and database demonstrates that we are living in a fascist state where the
rule of law is non existent and where people are being discriminated
against, blackmailed and their rights are being violated by those that
are supposed to defend them and the law. Those that insist in defending
this immoral administration should realize that all of this has no
possible defense. This is facsim at its best. The President of the CNE,
the Prosecutor, Chavez, The Vice-President and many others in
Government have cheated, persecuted an violated the rights of all
Venezuelans in a scale not seen since our last Dictatorship

To me this
implies that the following two Government officials, the President of
the Electoral Board Jorge Rodriguez on the left and the Prosecutor
General Isaias Rodriguez on the roght (no relation) should not only
resign, but be jailed and charged with massive violations of the rights
of Venezuelans and not following the laws, international treaties and
the Constitution:

The
same should be applied to Chavez, Vice-President Rangel, Governor
Diosdado Cabello and the members of the Supreme Court who have allowed
for the laws to be violated in such fashion, simply for their own
political gain.

While I was
shocked reading both Alek’s account and that of El Universal’s of this
program, the dirty feeling and uneasiness you get when using the
Maisanta software is truly remarkable. It all starts jokingly, people
telling you their ID numbers to “check them”, but very quickly turns
into a tense situation. The software is flawed, has information that is
incorrect, but additionally, it reveals people’s very personal
information from date of birth, to political preferences, to their
electoral history.

But I am getting
ahead of myself. The Maisanta software was first designed in May 2004
as a tool for Chavez’ campaign command to aid in getting the vote out.
But in doing so, the gross and obscene violation of the law and the
rights of the people implemented by these Government officials is
simply incredible and absolutely shocking.

The Maisanta
database includes every single registered voter in the country. I am
still trying to get the latest version, the one I obtained is from last
year, but the point is the same. It is likely the newest version
represents simply a deeper and more widespread violation of our rights.

The software
comes in a CD; you install it (3 Gbytes) and are ready to go. You don’t
know anyone that has it? Easy go to Plaza Bolivar in downtown Caracas
and for Bs. 3,000 or 4,000 you have your own copy. (The Chavistas
distributed over 35,000 of them last year for the recall vote and the
regional elections).

When it first
opens, you get the following window, for which I have used the ID
number of Isaias Rodriguez, our Prosecutor General, the man supposed to
uphold the law, but who has turned the other way on the face of this
very fascist tool:

From this, we
can have: his address, whether he signed or not to recall Chavez, his
date of birth, address (sometimes with telephone), as well as the
voting center that he uses. Additionally, he is “rated” as whether he
is a good voter or not, based on his recent activity as a voter.
Finally, the software is cross-referenced with whether the voter is a
member of two of the Government’s social missions, Mision Ribas, the
program to graduate people from high school in a short time, and
Vuelvan Caras, a “œscholarship” by which the Government gives people a
monthly stipend to participate in projects to work against poverty and
social exclusion

You may wonder
how I knew the ID number of the Prosecutor General? Easy, the software
has a very cumbersome sequential search tool that finds all of the
Isaias Rodriguez’ of the country, if by chance you did not know his ID
number. Imagine, if I was as unethical and immoral as them, I could,
for example, go check everyone with my last name in the country (all
related) and have a clear map of the political preferences in my family
tree. Is that perverse or what? Or think of people checking up in their
neighbors, co-workers and the like. I wonder how many articles of the Venezuelan Constitution are violated just by this fact. I counted eight, but really did not feel like counting further.

But note that in
the above window, there is a button that says “Listar cedulas de mi
Centro de votacion” (List ID numbers of my voting center). Press that
and you immediately get a list of everyone that votes in Isaias’ center
(who happen to be his neighbors) as shown partially here (I ahve degraded resolution on purpose so that names can not be read):

This window has
lots of information to discriminate, harass, classify and label people
near wher you live. You have the ID number, age, whether the person
signed petitions against the opposition, against Chavez, whether the
person is rated as “opposition”, abstainer and in columns not shown,
whether the person signed or not against Chavez and if his or her
signature were rejected or not. Then in the buttons below, you can
print, search, filter according to categories or simply click on the
button labeled “patriots”. Press that and you only see the true “Aryans” loyal to the process, those that signed against the
opposition. These are your revolutionary, fascist buddies, ready to die
or whatever for the revolution. In fact, if they are not on your side but they
participate in any of the misiones, you can threaten them with removal
of their meager perks, if they don’t want to follow orders. Cute,
immoral and perverse, no?

You can for example search for all people who are named Jorge Rodriguez
(below left) and find so many that you have to narrow the search (below
right) only to get 18 names if you are looking for the President of the
Electoral Board, with both last names Rodriguez and Gomez.
Conveniently, the address of the illustrious Jorge Rodriguez Gomez
(eigth from the top on the right farme), Head of the CNE, has been
removed to protect and respect his privacy. Remarkable and appropriate,
no?

There are many
more functions to this fascist and perverse software. You can look at
all centers in the country. Your center. Look for last names
nationwide, in your center, in your state.

But
let’s look at the data it contains and where it came from. First of
all, it contains all of the data in the National Electoral Registry,
including addressesandf somes telephones. This is the same registry
that should have been handed over to all political parties by the CNE,
six months before the election but the CNE refused to do so and was
only turned over a couple of weeks ago without addressees “to protect
the privacy of the people”. But how did the Chavistas get this copy?
And they have received periodic updates too! And they turn it have
cross linked it with the database of the Government’s Misiones, which
should also be confidential, as well as the death registry turned over
by the identification office to the Electoral Board last year.
Additionally, it contains all of the recall petition information and
all of the recent election informations for each and every voter in
Venezuela.

This simply
represents a massive violation of the rights of all Venezuelans, a
violation of the Constitution of the laws, a tool created for the
discrimination, persecution, repression as well as the blackmail of
those that receive aid from the Government (those “poorâ” that this
Government is supposed to care so much for), it indicates the absolute
neglect in the part of the Government in protecting the data of its
citizens and enforcing it and it clearly demonstrates that democracy
and respect of others are not part of the idiosyncrasy of this sad and
fake revolution. They have violated the very trust that they were given
by the people when they were elected.

This software
was coordinated way at the top. After the failure of Chavez’ command to
stop the petition for his recall he named his closest confidants,
Diosdado Cabello, Jose Vicente Rangel and Maripili Hernandez to the
Maisanta command. He held a swearing in ceremony on his nationwide
Sunday program. They are all responsible for this and will one day have
a day of reckoning.

In
any decent country with the rule of law, each and everyone of these
characters, fascists, liars, cheaters and abusers would be forced to
resign and be charged with crimes against the people, including the man
who is supposed to enforce the laws, the cynical Prosecutor Isaias
Rodriguez. Instead, they arrogantly come on TV daily defending what
they are doing in the face of perverse and fascist elements like the
Maisanta program, designed to persecute friend and foe alike.

(I really wanted
to convey the anger and disgust I felt using this program. This
represnts something that goes against the most basic feelings of
respect and humanity that I can think of. I felt like a voyeur capable
of peering into the lives of friends that were voluntarily given me
their ID numbers as a joke but had not realized all that could be
learned from it. In fact, until I sat down to write the post I did not
know how I was going to show any examples without violating someone’s
privacy. The examples shown, do not tell us anything new about these
cynical, sad and perverse characters of this stupid revolution)

Primero Justicia also pulls out of election: What now?

November 30, 2005

Primero Justicia has announced
its decision to withdraw from the upcoming National Assembly elections
next Sunday (Here isn their document). With this, all major parties except regional party Nuevo
Tiempo have announced their deciswion to withdraw. The election now
becomes another futile non-democratic exercize very much like that of
Venezuela’s twin counry Zimbabwe, run by Chavez’ buddy Mugabe.

What now Hugo?

Chavez’ Participatory Democracy at work, even threats no longer work

November 30, 2005

The letter
below is a symbol of the failure if Chavez’ much ballyhooed “participatory:
democracy, words that he tried to force into the final document at the Mar del
Plata Summit but was unable too. This letter was sent before the march two
weeks ago which was so sparsely populated by Chavez’ supporters. This despite
this so called “invitation” to “obligatorily”
participate in it. Those that still believe that Chavez is so popular should
come down to earth with this. Despite money, letters like this and threats, people
still did not go to this march. So, my dear fanatics, what is your explanation this
time around? This is the text of the letter from the Mayor’s office:

To:
Directors, Heads of Department and Coordinators of Committees

The purpose
of this memo is to invite you, with obligatory character, to participate in the
march that will take place on Nov. 11 2005 which will leave Plaza Morelos at 8:30
AM and will reach the corner of San
Francisco. The motive is to show our solidarity with
the presence of President Hugo Chavez in the Summit
of the Americas in Mar de Plata, Argentina
and against imperialism.

Note that
all of the people thus invited were forced to sign as proof that they had seen
this cordial invitation by the fascist Mayor of Caracas.

Student riots continue in Merida and Trujillo: Another student shot dead

November 30, 2005

And while we worry about electoral issues, the riots in the city of Merida over the death of a student have now spilled over to Trujillo,
where a student was shot dead and another injured in very violent
demonstrations. Lots of pictures in the media like the one above,
shwoing a burned truck in reaction to the news of the death of the
student

Politics, emotions and technical issues: To vote or not to vote, looking at both sides

November 29, 2005

Yesterday, I talked to a few technical people who have been involved
with the electoral process. I inquired about the things they have done
in audit of the software and the machines and after digesting what they
said I wrote the post last night. Basically their message was that they
were comfortable that the possible flaws in the system had been removed
and with the removal of the fingerprint capturing machines from the
process, they were capable of saying that it would be quite difficult
to cheat in the upcoming process, even if the possibility of a very
tricky and novel Trojan horse could not be eliminated. Thus, I
concluded and wrote that we had to go and vote. This is still my
opinion based on all of the technical details given to me by various
people in the last two or three days after it became known that the
sequence of votes could be easily determined using a shareware program,
which could be downloaded by anyone for free from the Internet.

I was taken aback by the strong reaction today by political parties,
most of which had decided not to participate. I had thought the
discovery of the problem with the sequence was also a victory, that
would give voters more confidence in the system and would drive out the
vote.I also found that most comments in my post were against the
participation by the opposition in the upcoming elections to the
National Assembly. In fact, I was also surprised that nobody ( Not one!) in the
comments supported my idea of going to vote, which was (and still is)
based on technical aspects.

Today I also talked to a political friend, discussing the issues and I
think he put it very well from his point of view, in the following
fashion:

Imagine you have been involved with some tough political negotiations.
You don’t trust the other side and you are trying to get things to be
as positive as you can for your side. You give and take for a while,
you win some and lose some. For the last year and half (and three elections) you have seen
hundreds of millions of dollars spent on voting technology which you
disagree with, but you have come to believe only a few things about. One
of the few things you believe in, because you have been told with a
straight face, time and time again, is that it is impossible to know how people voted: the vote of each person is absolutely secret. Then the following things happen in sequence (and it is not a pun):

1) You are told by a group of technical people which you don’t even know) that
this is not the case. The sequence of votes is easily known by
inspecting the hard drive. They not only tell you, but proceed to show
it and prove it in front of the international observers and the CNE.

You bring this up and the reaction from Jorge Rodriguez, President of
the Electoral Board is: Impossible! Smartmatic, my people, my technical
people, have all told me this is simply not possible. This is simply an
attack on the CNE, you people are trying to boycott the whole process.

A meeting is held in which the technicians prove it to the point that it can not be denied.

2) Another meetng is held with the head of the CNE, showing him the
evidence that the sequence can indeed be known. On the advice of his
technical people he offers: We will erase the hard dives within 72 hours
of the vote removing all evidence and traces of it.

You go back to the technical people and they laugh at you. First they
tell you, the machines have a UBS port, so, at each polling station
anyone can simply copy everything and have the information, you simply
can not have control over 27,000 voting machines for 72 hours. Second,
there is no truly reliable way of erasing the information on disk.Any
reformatting, rewriting or erasing of the disk leaves traces of the
earlier information and basically the only possibility is to destroy
the 27,000 hard dives.

3) You go back and tell this to the Head of the CNE, who once again
shows his ignorance of these matters. At this point he offers to
disconnect the machines, which certainly does not sem to help much as
even if they are disconnected they keep the sequence which can be used
later to know the votes.

4) Finally you get him to accept the removal of the fingerprint
machines. This eliminates the correlation unless somebody at 27,000
voting tables keeps a precise record of the orderof each voter. This
seems acceptable, until the annoncement is made publicly and the same
guy who promised the world, says this is simply a concession to lower
abstention and threatens that even if they are being graciously removed
in this election, they will be there a year from now for the 2006
Presidential election.

At this point you give up. You simply can not go on accepting that this
guy is running the voting process. Forget it, we are out.

How would you feel, he says?

I understand, this has become emotional, political and even personal.
There has been lie, after lie, after lie and manipulation after
manipulation. These guys can no longer accept this. And that is why
they made their decision. It is a political and somewhat emotional
decision.

But, I still think that technically, there was sufficient guarantees
from opposition technical people to assure us a fair electronic voting
system. But the cheating and deceit (and ignorance!) on the part of CNE
President Rodriguez has been truly unbelievable. He lied and he used
hundreds of millions of dollars to violate the law and the secrecy. And
apparently, nothing will happen to him. Such are the ways of the
revolution.

So, here we are, four days to go. We still don’t know if Primero
Justicia will or not go. But I get the feeling it does not matter. The
level of confusion and mistrust on the CNE is such that I appear to be
a very miniscule minority that thinks that we should go vote. I
understand them, but I suspect that unless all parties withdraw and the
international observers back that position, not voting may even be a
more damaging alternative to voting. Obviously, if I have no
candidates, I will not vote, but it just does not feel right. We shall
see.
