Hillary Clinton with the Ciudadano and Alberto FedericoRavell, just after Ravell twisted her right arm in order to have this picture taken and use it as protection with Hugo Chávez.
Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

are they all overweight or the picture was badly resized?
On a substantive note, this only cements in the eyes of chavecistas the image of venezuelan mass media as arms of the empire. As such it should be a very welcome ammnition to Chavez’ rethorical arsenal.

I like the idea of the US involvement in organizing this mediation as opposed to Hugo’s clear attempt to foment problems. Did anyone ever hear Chavez propose a diplomatic solution throughout any of this event?
Mark my words- in the end, Zelaya will be welcome back to jail in Honduras and will likely decide to retire to Costa Rica or be convinced to move to Caracas to continue so support an insurgency in Honduras. There is zero sense in Zelaya going back to Honduras as a lame duck wanted man.

I like the idea of Óscar Arias being the mediator. Other esteemed and neutral contributors in Latin America should also step up to the plate and offer their mediation services. Only in this way can countries gain some regional self-respect, rather than be beholden to the casual “ïmpartiality” of the Carter Center.
