My not so virtual reality

September 11, 2002

Today was the fifth month anniversary of the march on April 11th. which led to the brief departure of President Cahvez from office due to the deaths of 18 people. To date, the Government has blocked all efforts to establish an independent “truth” commission which would establish what happened that tragic day.

While the opposition did not agree on the tactic, somebody suggested creating traffic jams today in the city as a way of commemorating and protesting the deaths on April 11th. Because people are quite mad, the idea took hold and even if there were threats and opposition to the idea by most political parties, numerous groups created serious disruptions of traffic.

Imagine how Kafka-like it feels then to have Government spokesmen saying all day that this demonstrated the illegal ways of the opposition, who have no respect for the law or rights of others, only to have these same Government supporters  block with an illegal demonstration a main avenue in downtown Caracas in the afternoon. Moreover, since the beginning of the year crowds have ilegally gathered repeatedly around the Presidential Palace without any attempt to remove them. Today however, the opposition protest was met by large presence of the National Guard, the intelligence police and even the Army in some places. Such is the way of this virtual reality created by Chavez and his supporters in which everything is twisted around, changed and reinterpreted to support the whims of the Chavez “revolution”. We all say it can’t last much longer, but it does and we continue immersed in this surrealistic virtual reality day after day……

Conundrum on google, elgoog and China

September 9, 2002

If the Chinese dont have access to google but can get answers from using a mirror and elgoog, should I advertise it and risk them from finding out about it? Or should I hide it and keep the people in China from laughing at the authorities? This is a true conundrum, I chose to advertise it and thank bigwig for pointing this beautiful piece of hraka to me. (By the way can they see the Google Dance from China, I still dont know, I suspect not, but the site says yes)

A country in crisis

September 9, 2002

On Sunday an OAS/PNUD/Carter Center commission arrived in Venezuela to attempt to establish a dialogue that will reduce tensions in the country. President Chavez himself came back on Saturday from the Johannesburg meeting. While one would think that things would be quiet prior to the arrival of such a commission. the opposite has been true. In fact, it appears as if the level of confrintation continues to go up:

-President Chavez announces that the Government will confiscate companies that participate in a General strike later in the month.

-President Chavez says he will create a new union Federation to make sure the will of the workers is represented.

-Venezuela resumes sending shipments of oil to Cuba under a treaty that has been questioned in the Supreme Court and has not been approved by the National Assembly as required by the Constitution.

-President Chavez presents a video purported to show that a video broadcast on April 11th., the day of the massacre against innocent civilians, was made before the deaths occurred, citing a CNN reporter. Within hours, the reporter says he has been used.

-An opposition group rejects the participation of the Carter Center in the mediation, arguing that the Center was invited by the Government, while the other two organizations were not.

-Union, a party created by a former Chavez friend says that Chavez is hiding the evidence of his responsability in the deaths on April 11th.

-AD leader: Chavez has to be kicked out democratically.

-A bomb is placed at the home of one of the leading Governemnt Deputies.

-General under possible trial says he is being threatened.

-Vice-President calls on the opposition to avoid “an explosion”.

-Socialist League: The 11 judges of the Supreme Court, who voted not to try the Generals for the events in April, should be tried for covering up the facts.

-The Commander of the Army gathers all military leaders and says he wants the Army out of politics.

You be the judge of which side induces more confrontation. What is clear is that tensions are building up very fast, boding badly for the short and medium term future of the country.

Foveon, Carver Mead, Digital Photography and the perfect picture

September 7, 2002

While the best technology does not always win, I would not bet against Carver Mead, inventor of the HEMT chip for microwave communications and one of the pioneers of VLSI technology, who has invented/designed a new way of capturing images by using three level photodetectors which are embedded in Silicon. What this does is to get all three color Red, Green and Blue at each pixel in contrast with ordinary CCD devices as shown in this figure  from Foveon’s

website. Foveon is the company founded by Mead to commercialize this technology. Basically in a conventional CCD device, each pixel in the array captures one color and then cameras use algorithms and software to mix them and create each pixel in the image. Mead’s system, also allows for variable pixels so tha the ISO (Sensitivity) of the picture can be increased to very high levels. In Foveon’ website you can see the difference between the two technologies, not only in color reproduction and sharpness but also in the absence of things like Moire patterns and the like. What is exciting is that soon a Camera will be available (if you can afford it) from Sigma, the Sigma SD-9 will cost around US$ 2,500. While cracking this market with this new technology will not be a piece of cake, I think that you should not bet against Mead. Interestingly, Foveon is a private company but National Semiconductor owns 49% of Foveon according to Forbes (Foveon does not say how much on its web page). National Semiconductor manufactures the chips, thus there is even a way to bet on the technology. Hopefully other camera companies will adopt the technology and prices may come down below $1,000. As an orchid enthusiast (orchididiot?) I would love to own one. Imagine a perfect picture!!!!!

Weird Google

September 6, 2002

I wrote earlier two articles about google searches. Basically, the discovery of a new orchid species made for a good subject to study google searches, given that June 18th. was the first report of a new orchid named Phragmipedium kovachii .  On August 16th. I began testing how many citations there were to this term and whether or not my blog was reported in the search. Surprisingly, what I found was that initially the number of references dropped and whether my blog was catalogued or not varied from day to day. From an initial 33 results, the number dropped as low as 22 with my blog showing up or not in apparent random fashion. Then it began to climb slowly reaching 42 results three days ago at which point I stopped checking. But lo and behold today the number is once again down to only 26, although my site is still referenced. Thus, Google operates in mysterious ways. One side result of my experiments is that the only search engines that comes close to finding pages with a result comparable to Google is ixquick which combines a number of engines in one. Today, while Google sits at 26 different unique pages, ixquick finds  36 unique websites, higher than the 26 Google finds today, but below the 42 it found earlier in the week.

Note added on Sept. 9th.: On Monday Sept. 9th. , the term generated 40 pages and my site was back in the list. If this is correlated with the fact that the Google Dance began sometime Saturday, it might be that while Google is searching the web periodically, the search database goes back to some earlier image, once the search is over, the new database takes over.

Tense times in Venezuela

September 4, 2002

The mood in Caracas was tense tonight as a retired official was jailed as he visited the military commisary. At the same time, an active General of the National Guard issued an open letter to its members calling for “a rescue of the principles and values” of the National Guard, in apparent reference to the events of the last week involving the Guard in which women demonstrators were physically hurt as well as insulted by a National Guard General. Meanwhile, leaders of AD and the workers union were expressing their concern of a possible coup or civilian movement to oust Chavez in the face of an increasing deterioration of the economy. A General strike seems to be a given, the only question is just when it will take place. After a day of demonstrations in front of a military facility, the Supreme Court has yet to grant an injunction to stop military courts from indicting the Generals that participated in the April events. Reportedly, some of these cases were postponed for one month, which will not only allow for the Supreme Court to be back but it will go against the President’s wish to have all these officials out by Sept. 15th. conspirators on both sides also met secretly around the city planning strategy. What a day!!!

Google blocked in China—–Who else is being blocked?

September 3, 2002

As you have probably read (via J. Robb) already, Chinese authorities are blocking Google because of its capabilities of making a search in Chinese. Google is fighting it. This is obvious paranoia. Contribute to the paranoia by linking to this page and find other pages that are being censored.

Altavista, Playboy, MIT (???), Columbia Univeristy(???), BBC , Amnesty International are not NOT available, hotbot, lycos, Harvard University and ixquick are. Harvardsucks is blocked, go figure, loyalty to the alma mater? At least The Google Dance is still available there……does not mean they can use it

Is Venezuela ready to implode?

September 3, 2002

Venezuela may be on a collision course similar to that that took place in April as President Hugo Chavez is clearly challenging the military to attempt to overthrow him by provoking them into action before there is consensus that he needs to go.

As detailed here the Venezuelan Supreme Court decided on August 14th. that there was no reason to try four Generals for their part on the events in April. According to Venezuelan law, the Court has to find evidence against any high ranking military in order for a military Court to  try the official. Well, reportedly, military courts are ready to try and find guilty as many as 300 officers in the next few days beginning with four Generals tomorrow. If found guilty all the officers would be discharged, essentially cleaning the military ranks of all officers who do not support the President.

The possibility that the President may do this is actually far-fetched in the sense that there would clearly be a reaction from those officers who are more institutional than pro or agaisnt Hugo Chavez. Thus, the theory around Caracas is that Chavez wants to provoke these Generals into overthrowing him as a way of forcing them out into the open and clean the military from all possible opposition. The high ranking military will attempt to defend their positions via the Supreme Court in the next few days, but if the Court does not give them protection it might be too late for them to act. In any case, a conflict may be brewing and it may reach the proportions of that in April, which ended tragically. By forcing the hand of the high ranking officers, the President may be looking to forcing them into action before they are ready. Many of the high ranking officers that would remain have said that they will support the President only as long as he respects the Constitution. Stay tuned…

More on Venezuela goes Open Source: The juicy details…Dream On confirmed

September 1, 2002

Well, as the details of the Government’s announcement are better known the more I reinforce what I said in the last post: Dream On. Moreover the Minister of Planning has left himself open for a fierce attack by all sides as two of the permanent advisors to his Ministry on the subject, have very strong Linux commercial interests.

The Announcement:

1) All information published by the State has to follow an international standard with at least one free implementation.

2) All projects for software production financed by the State have to be done on free and open software.

3) All Government databases must be convertible into other databases in transparent form, without any additional cost.

4) All purchases have been suspended and current licenses will not be renewed.

In the presentation the Minister said: “The bases for everything is cooperativism, free software is based on true love ” Note the quotes……He also said “Free software up to where it is possible, proprietary software when it is indispensable”…..Ummmm, do I see a hole here?

Well, given 4) I am sure the inefficient Venezuelan Government is going to become even more inefficient soon. Maybe it is irrelevant, it takes months anyway to get a passport or driver’s license or national ID card, all of which are issued on Windows based systems.

To complete the circle, the Ministers has three advisors. One of them is the owner of Corvus Latinoamerica a company that represents Open Linux, Caldera and Red Hat  according to today’s paper (They at least support RedHat, I haven’t been able to confirm they represent it). A second one owns a company called Linux Systems in Venezuela. I can’t imagine what this company sells. Thus there appears to be at least a strong conflict of interest, good message to start fighting corruption.

Get the feeling this project is starting with the wrong foot. To implement 4) the only possibility is simply to continue using software licenses illegally, but Venezuela has signed the WTO agreement. As usual in Venezuela, stay tuned….this does not end here.
